The origins of e-commerce can be traced back to the 1960s when businesses conducted electronic transactions via primitive computer networks. Through Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), businesses were able to share business documents with other companies’ machines. During the same time period the military created ARPAnet which enabled important information to be circulated in the event of a nuclear attack. ARPAnet switched to Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in 1982 and is the same type of technology that powers the internet of today.
An e-commerce site should have a nicely designed logo, work on all browsers and devices, use promotional graphics and links to the most popular products, calls to action to push people to important sales pages, have a clear search field at the top of the site, display any specials, promotions or free shipping options, latest news area, etc.
